Daventry is located about 12 miles from Northampton, at the heart of England. It is just six miles from junction 16 of the M1 and also gives easy access to the A5, A14, M45, M6 and A1. It is a market town and the market is held in the High Street every Tuesday and Friday. Remains of an Iron Age hill fort have been found at Borough Hill which overlooks the town. Evidence of Roman buildings has also been found at this site. The town of Daventry itself dates back to Anglo Saxon times in 920AD. Shakespeare refers in 'King Henry IV part one' to 'the red nosed innkeeper of daintree'. Daintree being the old name for the town, derived from the towns history where Danish settlers planted an oak tree on Borough Hill to mark the centre of England. For many years the town was on the main coach road from London to Holyhead and the town thrived as a coaching town. Visitors can still drink at one of the three surviving coaching inns, The Dun Cow, The Saracen's Head and The Coach and Horses'. Visitors to Daventry can explore the surrounding countryside on foot, horseback or by bicycle. Also on offer is sailing or a gentle canal cruise.
