Desborough is a town in Northamptonshire, some five miles north-west of Kettering. The town's origins lie in the Bronze Age some 2000 years BC. Urns from this period have been found in and around the town. The 1st Century 'Desborough Mirror' is now in the British Museum along with an Anglo-Saxon necklace found in the Paddock Lane area of the town. Other stone artefacts are on display in the parish church of St Giles. The economy of Desborough mainly blossomed due to the spinning and weaving industries, specialising in silk by the nineteenth century. If you are interested in history, you should visit St. Giles Church in Desborough which dates back to 1225 AD and is believed to stand on the remains of an earlier Anglo Saxon church. The Old Manor House in Gold Street retains many features of its late 17th century origins. Ferdinando Poulton, a Roman Catholic lawyer was Lord of the Manor and reputedly one of the Gunpowder Plot conspirators. Desborough was one of the first towns to start its own Cooperative Society, which dominated the town for many years. Recently, that monopoly has gone and in the view of some of the locals this has improved investment in the town centre.
