Towcester is a small town in semi rural Northamptonshire. It is on the Roman Road Watling Street, now the A5. Towcester is perhaps most famous for its racecourse. With a recent investment of over £7.5 million into the course and its facilities and set in beautiful parklands overlooking the rolling Northamptonshire countryside, Towcester Racecourse and Conference Centre is one of the most picturesque racing venues in the country. Towcester lays claim to being the oldest town in Northamptonshire and possibly, because of the antiquity of recent Iron Age finds in the town, to being one of the oldest continuously inhabited settlements in the country. Evidence suggests that it was settled by humans since the Mesolithic era (middle stone age). There is also evidence of Iron Age burials in the area. Known in Roman times as Lactodurum it was a major staging post on the strategic road from London to Chester. Visitors can enjoy a meal and a slice of history at the Saracens Head. The history of The Saracens Head stretches back more than four hundred years and is featured in Charles Dickens' first novel, 'The Pickwick Papers'. The Saracens Head Hotel is still the centrepiece of modern life in Towcester, as it has been for centuries.
