Historically, the district of Farringdon existed within the City of London. Nowadays the name is generally used to refer to the more northerly area in and around Farringdon underground and mainline station. This is situated in Cowcross Street, just outside the Square Mile of the City and its financial institutions. Cowcross Street has a cheerful, buzzing personality with its small shops and alleyways, pubs and restaurants best experienced outside rush hours, when enormous crowds besiege the station. Farringdon is bounded by many fascinating places. The popular Leather Lane market and the diamond and jewellery centre of Hatton Garden are just a few minutes' walk from the station. So too is the long-established Smithfield Meat Market which, for all its tradition, shares its location with a range of fashionable bars and clubs including Fabric and Turnmills. To the north of Farringdon is Clerkenwell, noted for its historic buildings, village chic and fine Exmouth Market restaurants. For rather more down-to-earth dining, The Quality Chop House in Farringdon Road - a surviving Victorian diner - serves quality British fare including jellied eels, bacon and eggs, and bubble and squeak. From here, Farringdon Road ventures south past St Paul's Cathedral to Blackfriars and the Thames.
