Few sights in London are more awe-inspiring than the palatial buildings of Greenwich viewed from a river boat on the Thames. Here is a wealth of maritime history presenting itself so magnificently that Greenwich has been declared a World Heritage Site. Dominating the riverside are the fabulous baroque blocks and domes of the Grade I-listed Old Royal Naval College, partly designed by Sir Christopher Wren. First a hospital and then a training centre for sailors, it's used today by Greenwich University and Trinity College of Music. Further back sits the Queen's House, designed for James 1's wife Anne by Inigo Jones. England's first completely Classical building, it's now part of the National Maritime Museum, along with the Old Royal Observatory - home to Greenwich Mean Time and the Prime Meridian - which includes Wren's original Flamsteed House. It stands on a hill in the hugely popular Greenwich Park. New Observatory buildings include a state-of-the-art planetarium. Other Greenwich attractions include the town centre's oldest building of Trinity Hospital, the 1714 St Alfege Church, the foot tunnel under the Thames to the Isle of Dogs, a weekend market, and the 02 entertainment complex, formerly the Millennium Dome - the world's largest tented structure.
