South Kensington was an agricultural area until 1851, when the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park took place. After the exhibition, its royal commissioners, including Prince Albert, used the profits to buy an area of land to be devoted to culture and education. Thus South Kensington came into being as a setting for the fine museums and colleges established there today. The Natural History Museum is especially famous for its dinosaur skeletons and outdoor ice-skating rink, a great winter attraction. The Science Museum is a favourite with children, who enjoy its interactive displays, while the Victoria & Albert Museum exhibits the world's broadest collection of art and design. The Imperial College of Science, Technology & Medicine is located in South Kensington, along with the Royal Colleges of Art and Music, and numerous language schools. The area's most famous landmark is the Royal Albert Hall, a glorious concert building opened by Queen Victoria in 1871 and dedicated to her husband, Prince Albert - also remembered at the Albert Memorial in Kensington Gardens. South Kensington caters equally for students, tourists and wealthier types who might dine at Bibendum, shop at Chanel, party at Boujis and check out the latest models at the Lamborghini showroom.
