Wimbledon is world-renowned as the home of championship tennis, but this south-west London suburb has something for everyone, from greyhound-racing at the Stadium to rambles through the heathland, woodland and open spaces of the Common - the location of a Grade II-listed windmill, whose museum explains the story of windmills in Britain. On the Common's south corner stands Southside House, where visitors touring the rooms absorb the compelling atmosphere of an age-old family residence. The Wimbledon Society Museum of Local History is fascinating too. Meanwhile, the High Street's Eagle House dates back to 1617. Wimbledon Park is another popular destination, complete with sports facilities, woods and lakes, while the slightly more exotic Cannizaro Park hosts an annual music festival. Wimbledon Village, between the Common and the town centre, is the place to go for period buildings, stylish bars, cafés and restaurants, designer boutiques, and jewellery and antique shops. In Wimbledon, culture vultures can enjoy art galleries, Thai architecture at the Buddhist Buddhapadipa Temple and a wide range of entertainment at the New Wimbledon Theatre and its adjacent Studio. For sporty types, there's golf, horse-riding, stock-car racing and the Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum, which also offers tours of the legendary grounds.
