The village of Sutton Bridge is situated on the west bank on the River Nene, in south-eastern Lincolnshire. It also lies on the A17 and is very close to the borders of Norfolk and Cambridgeshire. In 1831 two lighthouses were built on the east and west bank of the river to commemorate the opening of the outfall cut of the River Nene. The East Bank lighthouse was once the home of Sir Peter Scott, the well-known artist and conservationist. There is a 10 mile coastal walk to Kings Lynn named after him. In the early 19th century the village consisted of just a few cottages and farmhouses. The area to the north and east was a vast, fast flowing expanse of marshland known as Cross Keys Wash. The River Nene (earlier known as the Wellstream) wound its way to the sea through this marshland. During the 19th century, three bridges were built spanning the marsh. In 1216, contemporary chroniclers recorded that the crown jewels of King John had been lost when his baggage train attempted to cross the Wellstream without a guide. Today crossing the river isn't a problem and, for those not in too much of a hurry, there are many fine pubs in the village where the traveller can rest a while.
