The historic market town of Tonbridge, which pre-dates Norman times, lies on the Wealdway Walk and the Medway Valley Walk on the River Medway where it splits into two channels. This provides the town with numerous riverside walks and two major river bridges, with locks and country walks easily accessible. The Weald of Kent can be explored easily from here. Recorded in the Doomsday Book in 1087 as Tonebridge, the name is thought to have indicated a bridge belonging to Tunna, a common Anglo-Saxon name or alternatively, a bridge belonging to an estate or manor from an Old English term ‘tun’. During the1800’s the town was known as Tunbridge but in the 1900’s the Royal Mail, due to confusion with the much newer town of Tunbridge Wells, changed it. Richard Fitz Gilbert who was a nobleman in William the Conqueror’s invading army built a castle in the 11th century but it was afterwards taken by King John and subsequently besieged by Prince Edward, son of Henry III. The besieged garrison burnt it to the ground rather than see it fall but the town and castle were rebuilt in the 13th century and became an official residence of Edward II. The mighty gatehouse of the 13th century Castle, is one of the finest in England and boasts the best example in Kent of a ‘Motte and Bailey’ Gatehouse. Completely dominating the town, even to this day, it has recently been completely renovated, re-roofed and restored as part of a £375,000 millenium project. The Earl of Gloucester earned the town the right to hold a weekly market in 1259. Although originally held in High street, the market moved to its present site in Bank Street in 1856 when the Stock and Cattle Market was formed. Although the cattle market closed in 1971, the site is still owned by the company and a weekly general market has been held since 1960
