Borehamwood is a commuter-town in south Hertfordshire (increasingly called Boreham Wood), just north of London between the M25 and A1M. It has over 30,000 residents, many in homes built recently and served by a centrally situated mainline railway station. This town is well-known for it’s film connections – being the home to several studios since the 1920s. Most have since gone but Borehamwood can be seen in many final cuts of British films. TVs Inspector Morse series was set in Oxford yet much was filmed in Hertfordshire and many location shots were filmed on the streets of Borehamwood! Today the BBCs soap-opera Eastenders is filmed at one set of studios. The local museum details the towns history, is free to visit and is open Thursday to Saturday. There is much to Borehamwood apart from cinematic history. There is a large public swimming pool, a multiplex cinema, ten-pin bowling (The Metropolis Centre), several parks (one featuring a lake), tennis courts and the initial third of the Watling Chase Timberland Trail. A par 71 golf course is nearby in Elstree too. The town centre is modern, encompassing a two-storey Tesco and a redeveloped Shopping Park, with many bars, pubs, restaurants and cafes. There is also plenty of accommodation available with a Corus hotel, Premier Travel Inn and others.
