Codicote is a large village, (mentioned in the Domesday Book of 1086), in Hertfordshire, just north of Welwyn and about 7 miles south of Hitchin. It lies near junction 6 of the A1M, on a chalk ridge of the Chiltern Hills. There is a small village green, surrounded by timber-framed and chequered-brick houses, including a good selection of pubs, shops and restaurants. There are various interesting buildings – 18th century Codicote Lodge and the Pond House which is now the Peking restaurant “as You Like It” (the oldest licensed premises in Hertfordshire), 17th century Codicote Bury and St Giles church dating back originally to approximately 1110 but mostly rebuilt in 1853. There are three places to stay here – The Globe and The Goat Inn, both guesthouses and The Bell Inn Country Hotel. The BestWestern Roebuck Inn and Holiday Inn Express hotels are 4 miles away in Stevenage. Shaws Corner and Knebworth House are both 2 miles away, the former is home of George Bernard Shaw from 1906 till his death in 1950. Both attractions are open to the public daily (March to October) and Shaw’s plays are performed in the superb gardens at Shaw’s Corner during the summer months.
