A small but busy village near Knebworth in Hertfordshire, Datchworth has Saxon origins and is mentioned in the Doomsday Book. This village is the result of the merger of other smaller villages such as Painters Green. It retains a green in the centre, which is the site of the whipping post, whose last recorded use for public flogging was in 1665. Previously there were stocks too, last utilized in 1899, but they are gone now. There is a small museum explaining the village history and with a display of over 800 local artefacts in a former blacksmith’s shop. All Saints’ church is situated on a hill and the spire can be seen for miles. Datchworth also plays host to many sports clubs – tennis, cricket, bowls and rugby. The two pubs of the village are opposite each other, The Tilbury and The Plough. The former presents celebrity Chef Paul Bloxham, of Junction Eight fame (the Dorchester Hotel’s restaurant) and with many awards to his name. There are places to stay too – Hawkins Grange Farm B& B or the luxurious Coltsfoot Country Retreat so this little place with its charms are easily accessible.
