Hinxworth is a small village in North Hertfordshire with a population of fewer than 250. It is not far off the Roman Great North Road and is near Baldock, where the nearest railway station is. The River Rhee borders the northeastern side and is a major tributary of the River Cam. This quiet little place has just one pub – The Three Horseshoes, dating back to the 18th century with a thatched roof and beams inside. Home-cooked food is served there, as are real ales, dogs are welcome and there is a beer garden with play area. Access to Hinxworth is good via the A1M, off which is the main place to stay near Hinxworth – the Travelodge. Hinxworth Place (not open to the public) is a medieval manor about half a mile from the actual village. It was once inhabited by Cistercian monks but was divided and sold in the 1960s, now mostly being home/workplace to sculptor John W. Mills. A point of interest to note is that the manor is said to be haunted on stormy autumn nights by a crying child!
