In 1903 Letchworth became the first Garden City in the world. This was the dream of Ebenezer Howard, who desperately wanted to decrease poverty in Edwardian society and strongly believed that a blend of the best features of town and country, and all profits from the town being used to help ordinary townspeople was the solution. He founded The First Garden City Heritage Museum in a beautiful 1907 designed house, which is open all year round, except Sundays, and charts the story of Letchworth from it’s Garden City origins. Shopping facilities are plentiful on the tree-lined streets & Letchworth is very accessible being 5 minutes from the A1M, ample parking, a mainline train station and both Luton and Stansted airports in the vicinity. Eateries are numerous, there’s a cinema and a variety of places to stay to suit all budgets. There are parks and gardens throughout, providing green surroundings for numerous landmarks and home to another museum, also housed in an Edwardian building, including 4 art galleries with ever-changing exhibitions. This museum pays homage to an unusual resident of the area and the town mascot – the Letchworth Black Squirrel! Introduced at Woburn Park in Bedfordshire at the end of the last century the little creatures are a rare mutation of the common eastern grey. Letchworth certainly is a unique place.
