Melbourn is a large village in the far south west of Cambridgeshire with over 4400 inhabitants. It has a primary school and a state secondary school, Melbourn Village College. There is very ancient history including evidence of a settlement several thousand years ago. The Romans had a camp here and archaeologists excavating Saxon graves found many interesting artifacts. Mentioned in the Doomsday Book (1086 AD) the village was then called Meldeburna, recording 2460 acres of arable land and 55 heads of family. The village found fame when Queen Victoria rode through on her way to Cambridge and John Bunyan once preached at the Cross. The River Mel runs from Melbourn Bury, along the outskirts of the village and on into the River Cam. There is a particularly good walk, starting at the Shene Mill Riverside Guest House, continuing through the Village College playing fields and finishing up at the Water Mill. Melbourn boasts many thatched cottages still remaining despite the great fire of 1917 and the demolition of numerous unsafe ones in the 1930s, and is proud to be part of the ‘necklace villages’ – attractive villages which form a ring around the south of Cambridge city. There is also a well-known Science Park and a railway station in the neighboring village, Meldreth.
