Redbourn is a village on Watling Street, near St Albans and Harpenden, with the M1 running close by and having a population of 6,000. It has Saxon origins and its church of St Mary is Norman, with the village taking it’s name from the River Red that runs across the common. The village was a popular stage-coach stop having a lot of inns, many of which remain and are still pubs today, most serving real ales and food. The Bull is a fine example of a traditional English pub dating from the 16th century and was used as a filming venue in 2003 for the BBCs Auf Wiedersehen Pet. Some of the pubs offer accommodation and there is a Ramada Jarvis hotel in the village. For centuries, Redbourn was primarily a farming community (it still holds the Herts County show annually) but old industries in the village included making straw plait and hat making — the Village Hall was formerly a straw hat factory. The village apparently hosted the first ever recorded cricket match on the Common in 1666. There is a museum, open only at the weekend, charting the village history to the present day. In 2007, for the first time, there will be a music festival on the County Showground nearby with headline acts Feeder, The Ordinary Boys, Dirty Pretty Things and The Automatic.
