The village of Bransgore (4 miles north of Christchurch) is situated in the far south west corner of the New Forest, although the majority of the village lies outside the new New Forest National Park. The village was not formed until the late 18th century, it is first mentioned in 1759 and is thought to have originated as a stopping off point for sheep herders on their way to the market in Ringwood. It was evidently not much thought of for in 1840 the canon of Winchester described it as a "neglected common with a group of mud cottages, the refuge, for the most part, of those who have been chased from more civilised places"! St.Mary`s was built as a Chapel of Ease in 1823 and underwent considerable rebuilding in 1894 little while after Bransgore became an independent parish in 1875; Henry Wilberforce, son of William Wilberforce, was once the vicar here. The first school was built in 1841, the present school was built in 1894 and the old `National` school building re-built into church rooms. The Three Tuns is a former 17th century farm house converted into a fine village pub at the turn of the C20th. Brick making was an important employer in the area and the humps, bumps and hollows of the workings can be still seen around the village today. Bransgore has come a long way from a collection of "mud cottages" and is now home to around 4500 people who enjoy the Forest and the close proximity of Bournemouth and the coast.
