Fleet, 38 miles from London, owes its development to its proximity to the capital and acts as a dormitory town, its recently built new housing estates at Elvenham Heath adding 6,000 more to its 30,000 population. Twinned with Levignen, Picardy, the suburbs have blended into neighbouring villages of Crookham and Church Crookham with Hampshire’s largest freshwater lake, Fleet Pond Natural Reserve the area’s most notable beauty spot a magnet for those in the surrounding area. London’s skaters travelled by train in the past to the lake when it froze over, such was its fame. The modern town, previously a market town, with its few Victorian buildings, has fast links to London either by the M3 or by rail with a 50 minute or 40 minute fast journey to Waterloo. A canal links the town to Basingstoke and the Wey Valley. There are five churches, a hospital, a number of schools including St Nicholas, an independent school for girls, Hart Shopping Centre and Hart Leisure centre as well as a week-long Carnival in July, a half marathon also one of its leisure sporting activities. The town was the proud home to the Ghurkas for 29 years until 2000.
