Tracing its history back to Roman Times the village of Rowlands Castle in Hampshire has led a relatively quiet life, the Romans had settled here and the area was known for its brick and tile manufacture. The town of Rowlands Castle grew as a result of the London to Portsmouth railway line in the 19th century, this enabled people to commute and today Portsmouth is around half an hour away by train. Today it is a relatively quiet residential village with a few local shops and a couple of local pubs one of which is allegedly managed by a former Van Morrison guitarist and is close to the village green. The village takes its name from a Motte the remains of which are east of the village, there was a castle here in the 11th /12th century but had all but disappeared by the 15th century and when the railway arrived the balance of the site was damaged and there is little evidence of its remains. Ask someone to describe a typical English village and there is little doubt that it would include a village green, good local pubs and shops with a close sense of community and they could actually be describing Rowlands Castle.
