Southsea Castle, before which the Mary Rose famously sank, was built using stone from the remains of Beaulieu Abbey by Henry VIII. The town looking over the water towards Ryde on the Isle of Wight is a pleasant one with plenty of things to do for those who fancy giving it a whirl. This small Portsea Island settlement has the best range of accommodation, both for tourism and residential, of all of the Hampshire coastal towns, with many different interesting architectural styles blending comfortably. The local shopping provides for almost everyone’s needs and there’s a beach within walking distance no matter where you are in Southsea, which brings in the tourists. Southsea has a scary (and tiny) old roller coaster of the classic design over at Clarence Pier, near the D-Day Museum and The Sea Life Centre - well worth a visit for all the family.
