Barking is a suburban town in east London and the main district of the London Borough of Barking and Dagenham. The manor of Barking was the site of Barking Abbey, which dates from AD 666. Today only the ruins of the Abbey remain, together with the Curfew Tower, alongside the Norman church of St. Margaret's where Captain James Cook was married. Fishing was the most important industry in Barking from the 14th century, until the mid-19th. Fisher Street was named after the fishing community there. A steel sculpture titled The Catch references Barking’s fishing heritage and can be found on the Fanshawe Avenue roundabout, close to the town centre. Eastbury Manor House is a listed mansion house in Barking built during the reign of Queen Elizabeth I. The house was restored by the National Trust and stands in 1.5 acres, including a walled garden. Nearby Valence House Museum is sited in parkland and partially surrounded by a moat, and serves as the borough's local history museum and art gallery, housing an impressive collection of artefacts and archives. Vicarage Field offers indoor shopping in Barking town centre and a market is held every week on Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays. Barking station is served by both tube and train, and Upney tube station is in east Barking
