Chelmsford, the County town of Essex, has much to offer. Only 35 minutes away from London by train or a 30 minute drive from Stansted, London's fastest growing airport, Chelmsford is an ideal base from which to explore.
Chelmsford was founded as a market town on September 7 1199 by King John who granted to Bishop of London the right to hold a weekly market within his manor.
Chelmsford has recently been independently judged best shopping centre in Essex. A pedestrianised High Street and Town Centre link High Chelmer and The Meadows, the two main undercover shopping areas. Add to this the retail market, the Antiques and Secondhand Goods Market, international restaurants, cafes, wine bars and pubs (some with live music), plus a new eight screen cinema, the Cramphorn Theatre and the Civic Theatre, the Chancellor Hall and a number of exciting nightclubs, and all in all the Chelmsford entertainment picture is excellent.
Chelmsford Town Centre has up to 8,000 parking spaces and is well served by 25km of cycleways as well as frequent bus and rail connections. There is a range of accommodation and within walking distance of the town centre is Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre with many facilities including the County's only ice rink.
There is also the Chelmsford Museum and the Essex Regiment Museum in Oaklands Park, and many other parks with riverside walks and special play areas for children. Chelmsford is also home to Essex County Cricket Club and Hylands House, a beautiful Grade II listed neo-classical villa, set in the 509 acre Hylands Park. Restored to its original glory it can be hired for wedding celebrations, private functions and corporate events.
Chelmsford is surrounded by picturesque villages, each with its own charm and history and for the walker, the Essex Way, linking Epping with Harwich, passess through rural Chelmsford. Boating enthusiasts will find the Chelmer and Blackwater Navigation provides a unique view of rural Essex from the water where barges and narrow boats may be hired.
