Halstead is a rural town located in Essex, near Colchester and Sudbury. The town is situated in the Colne Valley, and originally developed on the hill to the north of the river. Its main attractions include a local Antiques Mill, the location of filming for some episodes of the television programme, Lovejoy. Nearby Moyns Park, a Grade I listed Elizabethan country house, was the home of the Gent family until the late 19th century. It was once owned by Ivar Bryce, a friend of Ian Fleming, who stayed at the house in the summer of 1956. It is said that Fleming made final changes to his novel From Russia with Love in the house. The house was also the location for several Hammer Horror films. Halstead has a plethora of bars and pubs including: Scenarios in the ornate Co-operative building in Trinity Street, built around 1887; The Locomotive in Butler Road; The Bull Hotel in Bridge Street; The White Hart which dates back to the 15th century, one of the oldest coaching inns in Essex; and Whispers Wine Bar in the High Street. The Empire Theatre in Butler Road formerly showed films but still hosts theatrical productions, live music and bingo nights. Essex Tourism - 0871 716 2199 Calls cost less than 10p per minute
