Witham is a Georgian market town located in Essex, midway between Colchester and Chelmsford. There are a number of 16th century buildings, in particular the timber-framed Spread Eagle Inn. Witham's current Town Hall was once the George Coaching Inn and is 500 years old. Now it holds the Town Heritage Centre and Tourist Information Centre, with an exhibition of local history. Witham's River Walk and Whetmead Nature Reserve extend about three miles through the town, and are a natural habitat for a wide variety of animals and birds. Cressing Temple, 3 miles north of Witham, was founded by the Knights Templar and is home to the two finest Templar barns in Europe. The manor of Witham was given to the Knights Templar in 1148. Cressing Temple was the earliest foundation of Templar lands in Britain, and is an ancient moated farmstead housing rural buildings and two vast oak built barns, over 700 years old. It is open to the public and has an exhibition centre and Tudor walled garden. The celebrated novelist and playwright Dorothy L. Sayers lived and wrote in Witham from 1929 to 1957. A statue of her is located in Freebournes Court. Every September Witham hosts the International Puppet Festival.
