The North Devon village of Appledore, with Bideford to the south and Barnstaple east, sits at the confluence of the Torridge and Taw rivers, a place of white-washed and colour-washed cottages some of which date back to Tudor days. Now as for hundreds of years the sea is the focus for the settlement: along with the tourism that would be expected of such a pretty spot there is still shipbuilding, though only one works, albeit one housed in an impressively large structure, has survived the decline of that industry; and the lobster pots and fishing nets dotted around are not just decorative. Fishing trips for visitors now provide an additional source of income for some boats. In times long past this was a port too, known for its tobacco trade (legal and otherwise). Today it’s yachts that are moored outside the village rather than commercial vessels, but the location of a lifeboat here spans the two eras. With a maze of narrow streets and the pleasant 19th century church – another link to the sea its wooden screen made from a sailing ship – Appledore has retained its own character, enhanced by the shops and eateries that cater for locals and holidaymakers alike.
