Newton Abbot, straddling the river Lemon, was once a quiet country market town in rural Devon, that was until the Great Western Railway opened it up to the outside world. Nowadays it is a bustling town with indoor and outdoor markets and many excellent shops. It is often called the “Gateway to moor and sea” Owing to its proximity to the Dartmoor National Park and the popular seaside resorts of Torquay and Teignmouth. Newton Abbot has its own railway museum and of course the Newton Abbot race-course for a day out trying your luck on the horses. Inside the town itself can be seen St Leonard’s Tower, all that remains of a Medieval church demolished in the 19th Century. There are two houses of interest worth a visit in Newton Abbot. Ford House was built with an ‘E’ shaped floor plan, and both Charles I and William of Orange are known to have stayed there. Bradley Manor is a 13th Century Manor House set in secluded woodland. The Great Hall bears the Coat of Arms of Elizabeth I. Hidden in the grounds is the “Puritan’s Pit” A natural hollow, used by non-conformists to hold their secret meetings and avoid persecution.
