The ancient market town of Torrington in North Devon perches high on a cliff overlooking the deep wooded valley of the river Torridge. Its position offers stunning views of the surrounding countryside. Torrington provides easy access to the famous Tarka Trail for walkers and cyclists. The town is built around the Market Square where shops sell local produce. Torrington is home to the world famous Dartington crystal glass and visitors can tour the factory before purchasing a piece from the factory shop. In the old Town Hall is a museum which offers exhibitions of local artefacts, portraits and photographs. There are also exhibits on local industries and archaeological specimens. A small archive is available for tracing family history. Close by Torrington is the National RHS garden at Rosemoor. As its name suggests, it features two rose gardens with many species in bloom as well as water and bog gardens. There is also a visitor centre, restaurant and shop. Back in the town itself, the areas Civil War exploits are celebrated in the permanent Torrington 1646 exhibition. A visit to the Plough Arts Centre will round off a holiday to remember in one of the most beautiful spots in the country.
