Lying close to Matlock and Bakewell at the bottom of the Peak National Park in Derbyshire is the village of Birchover. This is a superb location for those wishing to explore the area, it is well placed for those who want to visit Cratcliffe Tor and Robin Hoods Stride, at the foot of Cratcliffe Tor there is a hermits cave with a 12h century crucifix carved into its walls whilst Robin Hoods Stride is so called because the distance between the two pinnacles are 22 yards – the same measurement as the length of Robin Hood’s stride! It consists mainly of 17th and 18th century cottages all built from the local gritstone that is to be found at the edge of the moor. Whilst you are spending the time enjoying the local views a trip to one (or even both) of the local pubs is worth it. The Druids Inn apparently gets its name from the druids who practiced their art at nearby Rowter Rocks, to be found immediately above the pub. The other is the Red Lion with an interesting well feature inside the main bar covered with thick glass and revealing a 30’ deep well!
