Nestling in the foothills of the Pennines, the Peak District town of Glossop is a truly historic place steeped in English heritage, with evidence of Roman, Saxon, Norman and Medieval occupation, parts of a Roman fort can still be seen today. Though Glossop Hall has been demolished, it formed part of the estate owned by the Dukes of Norfolk until sold to the town Council in 1924. the park remains as a public park. The industrial town is surrounded by arable and pasture land reaching towards the edge of the moors and the panoramic views of the Derbyshire hills are a sight to behold. As with many other Peak towns and villages, Glossop is somewhat of a Mecca for walkers and ramblers. And for those who prefer more active sports, the town has an abundance of recreational facilities including leisure centre, swimming pool, squash courts and golf course. Railway enthusiasts will enjoy the display of restored steam engines in the town’s Exhibition Hall. Glossop mixes cultures old and new, continuing the ancient tradition of well dressing while becoming quite famous for hosting jazz and global music festivals. Access to the town is convenient with a direct railway link to Manchester.
