New Mills in Derbyshire lies conveniently close to both Stockport and, more importantly for its residents and visitors, the Peak District. Lying at the confluence of the River Goyt and the River Sett, it can trace its history back to the 13th century. The town because of its unique location, saw the first mill being built here at that time and following the success of that original mill other mills soon followed and New Mills became a centre for the paper and cloth industries seeing cotton mills and paper mills being built in the area. Today there are no working mills remaining in the town today although a stroll around “The Torrs” will reward the visitor with some outstanding views of the ruins of the mill and the weir and gorges that make this a popular day trip location for visitors from the nearby City of Manchester. Indeed for the walker there is plenty to see and do and many visitors make New Mills their base and take the opportunity to explore more of the Peak District from this interesting town. New Mills has a major claim to fame amongst schoolchildren as it is home to the famous childrens’ sweet manufacturers, Swizzels, Parma Violets, Refresher chews and Drumstick lollipops are all made here in New Mills.
