The town of Southam in Warwickshire is to the south of Coventry on the road between Daventry and Leamington Spa and such is the historic value of the town centre that it is a Conservation Area. Because of its unique location the town of Southam became a popular coaching stop and market town for travellers. The church, St James’ Church, was founded in 1294 and boasts a broach spire whilst the town had acquired its market status in 1227 and regular markets are still held here today. During the Civil War the village of Southam was the scene of a skirmish when in 1642 the town was surrounded by some 13,000 troops. Today the town of Southam is still surrounded by farm land and countryside, it is a vibrant community attracting many visitors from the nearby villages to its wide range of local stores, bars and restaurants. It is easy to appreciate the attraction of this town, Coventry, Rugby, Banbury and Kenilworth are all easily accessible by car whilst Birmingham, Solihull and Oxford are equally accessible from the M40 and yet, for the residents, once here in Southam the calm and tranquillity of the area becomes immediately apparent.
