The tiny village of Elton lies in what used to be Huntingdonshire, but is now part of Cambridgeshire. It is situated on the B671 road, about eight miles south west of Peterborough. The hamlet of Over End is located a mile south of the village, on the same road. Elton is two miles away from Fotheringay, where Mary Queen of Scots was beheaded. It is also five miles away from Oundle, a historic market town which features the Talbot Inn. The Talbot Inn was built from the stones of the ruined Fotheringay Castle and features a wooden stairway taken from the castle. This stairway was the last stairway Mary walked down on the way to her execution. Close by is Elton Hall; an extraordinarily romantic, part Gothic house, which stands in the midst of unspoilt landscaped parkland. It offers a fascinating mix of styles and is surrounded by stunning gardens. There is also a garden centre to visit and the Loch Fyne restaurant that specialises in seafood. Elton Hall lies at the heart of a 3,800 acre Estate made up of farms, houses, cottages and commercial property, together with woodland. The Estate straddles the Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire borders. Pubs in Elton itself include The Crown and The Black Horse, both of which serve food.
