In south east Buckinghamshire, on the edge of the Chilterns and 25 miles from London, is the small but historic village of Chalfont St Giles. The church is Norman, built around 1160, The Vache is an Elizabethan mansion which was home to friends of Captain Cook and Jordans Meeting House (built in 1688) is the most famous of the Quaker meeting houses. There is a duck pond on the green (as well as tea rooms) in this little village, which is fed by the River Misbourne, surrounded by Alms houses, built by Bishop Hare. In the Great Plague of London in 1665, John Milton retired to Chalfont St Giles, and it is here that he completed the epic poem “Paradise Lost”. His Grade 1 listed cottage from the 16th century is open daily to the public. Cherry Trees B&B and The White Hart offer accommodation here, but there are hotels too within a few miles. The village has several pubs, including Merlins Cave, The Fox & Hounds and The Pheasant Inn (now a fish restaurant, but dating from the 16th century & frequented by troops in the Civil War). Nearby other attractions include Chenies Manor House, Bekonscot Model Village and Chiltern Open Air Museum.
