Olney is a thriving little market town on the A509 in north Buckinghamshire, roughly 12 miles from Northampton, Bedford and Milton Keynes. The Market Place retains its 18th century character and is where the market is held every Thursday and the “Dickens of a Christmas” held yearly since 1995 at the beginning of December. For 300 years lace making was at the heart of industry in the area, however the trade ceased due to competition and lace is now made by hand purely for pleasure. The River Ouse runs through the town, previously helping industry but now there are gorgeous water meadows bordering the Clifton hills, creating a large attractive area for walks and picnics. The poet, William Cowper, lived here from 1769 till 1786, as did John Newton, the curate, and together they wrote the “Olney Hymns”, including “Amazing Grace”. The Cowper Museum in Market Place is open from March to December. Emberton Country Park provides 170 acres of fishing, sailing, windsurfing and children’s playgrounds with a caravan and camping area. A range of accommodation is available, as are many restaurants, cafes and pubs. The town won silver in Thames and Chiltern Country in Bloom Small Town competition 2006 but is best known as home to the 500 year old Pancake Race!
