Wick is a Gloucestershire village that lies on the A420 between Bristol and Chippenham, south of the Cotswolds and not far from the Georgian splendour of Bath. The nearby area, known as the Golden Valley, is quintessentially English and is very popular with not only walkers, bird-watchers and equestrians - but is also a favourite destination for hot air balloonists! The local church, the Victorian built St. Bartholomew's, faces the watermeadows of the River Boyd that bisects the village. The nearby Blue Lodge was once home to Anna Sewell, author of the famous Black Beauty novel. Tracy Park, now a golf club, is thought to have been the inspiration for Birtwick Place which features in the story. A short way out of town is Hangman's Hill which lies on the Bath Road. Legend tells of a highwayman who used to work the road, robbing unwary travellers as they passed by. It is said that he was caught and hanged on the hill and now haunts the road. As well as having two good pubs the village is also well served with some quality accommodation such as the charming country style of Southwood House or the magnificent Bury Manor Castle.
