Lying to the North of Birmingham is the town of Smethwick, taking its name from Anglo Saxon times where it originated as a small settlement. Its industry then was rooted in metalworking however it remained a small hamlet until the end of the 19th century. Inexorably linked with the development of the Midlands is the Industrial Revolution and this was also to have an impact on the rural idyll that was Smethwick – the coming of the canals and the railways transporting coal for the powerhouse that was the Midlands mills soon meant that Smethwick was to become an important transport link. By 1852 Smethwick was one of the most important towns in the area and the population had grown from around 1,000 in 1801 to over 50,000 in 1901. Smethwick though had to evolve as the heavy industry that had created its wealth slowly disappeared and today it is busy with new developments, its shopping centre, leisure centre and parks all contribute to a new way of life for the residents of Smethwick.
