Tipton is to be found to the north of Dudley in the Midlands and whilst the town can lay claim to ancient origins its success and growth is very much a product of the Industrial Revolution. You may never have heard of the Aaron Manby but this was an important development for she was the world’s first iron steamship built at the Horsley ironworks in 1822. Tipto was also famous for the rate of production of its coal – in fact at the Great Exhibition of 1851 a huge lump of coal was displayed from the Tipton mines – this lump of coal was reputed to weigh around 6 tons! Such was the importance of Tipton that its first canal was driven through in 1769 and as the local canal network grew Tipton earned the nickname “The Venice of the Midlands” to the locals though it was known as “Tip’n on the cut”. Today Tipton may not be on any tourist route, it does boast a number of listed buildings and canal locks and its contribution to the Industrial Revolution cannot ever be taken away from the town or its people.
