At the mouth of the River Ouse, 6 miles from historic Lewes up river and a few miles along the beach to Seaford, Newhaven is a gateway to France where the busy harbour and port has ferries to Dieppe. It has an impressive Fort perched high on a hill, built by the Victorians in 1860, which was instrumental in defence during two wars. Newhaven Fort is a fascinating place to visit with tours and exhibits that give an insight into daily life for the servicemen living and working there. The Museum has local treasures, as well as exhibits from prehistoric times. If all things maritime please you then you will not be disappointed with the insight into Smuggling and shipwrecks. No visit would truly be complete without a trip to Paradise Park, whose beautiful gardens with a Heritage Trail, where Jurassic times are brought to life with moving dinosaurs.
