Home to ‘The Long Man’ carved into chalk hills a 235 feet giant although very interesting, there are other things to tempt you. This sleepy village boasts a 12th Century Church and Priory built by Benedictine Monks, many old buildings to enchant the visitor, the oldest being ‘Hunters Dene’ built about 1450. A visit to the church complete with ancient Yew Tree, said to be older than the church, bewitches the visitor with it‘s magnificence. To enter through a 14th Century porch is one thing, the splendour of the stained glass windows another, but as the history of this building seeps into your thoughts and places you back into Norman Times, is something else. The area has Neolithic flint mines for explorers, Roman roads for walkers and cyclists, and a village and church that bestows charm for the painters and photographers amongst you. If all this sounds a little too quiet, don’t despair, Eastbourne with it’s shops and seashore is close by. Drusillas Zoo, and Alfriston a real gem, and with The Clergy House and jumble of exquisite houses a pleasure. Beachy Head Lighthouse or Cuckmere Haven and it’s Nature Reserve are near, what more could a person want.
