Castleton is an idyllic village positioned in the heart of the Yorkshire Moors, overlooking the Esk Valley. This remote corner of Yorkshire is engulfed by wild and dramatic scenery of gorse, and purple heather covered moorland that has been inhabited as far back in time as the Stone Age. Its iron stone mining, smelting, quarrying, and agricultural heritage thrived with its rich and fertile landscapes and led to the growth of the village. Today's visitors will find this pleasing location has a winding main street with mellow stone built cottages and houses which will encourage artists and photographers to capture the scene. There's interesting shops lining the High Street, restaurants, and Inns where a warm welcome is offered with a coffee or perhaps something a little stronger. Visitors and holiday makers alike are drawn by the promise of an abundance of wildlife across the moors from Lamas to Lapwings and Curlews, footpaths, bridleways and the Esk Valley Walk with its unbeatable scenery journeys through the village. A wander through the attractive streets will uncover an Art Gallery, and a fascinating church that's dedicated to St Michael and St George where the infamous Mouse Man has been at work and perhaps left his mark.
