The tiny North Yorkshire settlement of Ferrensby lies just five minutes or so from either junction 47 or 48 of the A1(M), within easy striking distance of Harrogate, and closer still to Knaresborough. Situated as it is, so close to the old Great North Road, it is not surprising that the biggest attraction in the village is an old coaching inn, the General Tarleton. The inn has been there for some 250 years, but in recent times it has developed into a particularly well reputed restaurant as well as remaining a proper country inn. At the edge of the quiet village, which has some attractive Georgian properties, there is an adventure maze to amuse and exhaust the kids. Venturing beyond the village there are many more attractions within a 12 mile radius: Beningbrough Hall, a magnificent early Georgian mansion and park, with a large collection of 18th century portraits on view; Fountains Abbey, a World Heritage site; Brimham Rocks, strangely shaped by nature into something that might seem more at home in the badlands of the USA; and Newby Hall with its stunning Adam interior.
