The little Teesdale village of Ovington is these days officially in County Durham, but moving borders doesn’t change the soul of a place, and many would still see it as part of North Yorkshire. Situated on the south bank of the Tees Ovington between Barnard Castle and Darlington, Ovington is just a ten minute drive from Scotch Corner on the A1along the old Watling Street (now the A66) and some country lanes. The village then is an easy place to get to and from for travellers wanting to explore the Yorkshire Dales to the south and Wearsdale to the north, or happy to stay in Teesdale itself, or a good place to break a journey to or from Scotland. The place is noted for its maypole, though the one now standing on the Green is relatively new. The story goes that the first maypole set up in Ovington was liberated in the 17th century from the nearby village of Hutton Magna by some Ovington toughs. Either because the Ovington lads were too formidable, or perhaps because the folk of Hutton were happy to be rid of it at a time when the Puritans were very down on maypole dancing, nothing was done about the blatant theft. Though Ovington is a small place it still has its village pub, The Four Alls, a pretty stone building with its own micro-brewery to reward the walker after a day’s exertions, or just a nice place to relax and sip characterful beer.
