Once a market town, granted its charter by Henry II in 1256, Tollerton is now a village of about 1,000 inhabitants. Situated in the lovely Vale of York, Tollerton is roughly in the centre of a triangle formed by York, Knaresborough and Thirsk. While there are no markets these days, the link to Henry II’s days is maintained through holding an annual fair, as it was chartered to do three-quarters of a millennium ago. This takes place on the village green as it may have done all those years ago when the first was held. Something else that seems timeless is the pretty River Ouse that runs by the village, offering some views of natural charm. This is a village that has kept its village shop and post office, a church, and two hostelries. In a neat demonstration of the old and the new, one of them - an 18th century coaching inn of some character - is a traditional place complete with tap room, and the other has embraced change and houses a Chinese restaurant. Within about six miles of York, Tollerton also has plenty of attractions closer to hand. Beningbrough Hall, the Roman town and Devil’s Arrows at Boroughbridge, and Sutton Park are all a short drive away along country lanes.
