Bathgate is a historic industrial town in West Lothian in Scotland situated 18 miles south-west of Edinburgh on the slopes of the Bathgate Hills. Bathgate is well-known as the birthplace of Sir James Young Simpson (1811) the inventor of chloroform as an anaesthetic and in 1850 the worlds first paraffin refinery was developed here by Dr James ‘Paraffin’ Young (1811-83) Bathgate was awarded Burgh of Barony in 1661 although the origins date back to the 1100’s. A Royal Castle was built c1316 given as a dowry by Robert the Bruce to his daughter Marjorie on her marriage; a few ruins can be found on the local golf course. This popular tourist destination has a hotel and holiday accommodation, shops and a Sports and Fitness Centre with multi sports arena, indoor bowling, roller skating and a 9-hole golf course. The Bennie Museum opened in 1989 in the oldest row of cottages in the town and tells the story of Bathgate’s heritage and Ballencrieff Fishery is a fly fishery with trout angling and equipment hire. Cairnpapple Hill is a prehistoric ceremonial and burial site dating from 300-1400BC, standing approximately 1000 feet above sea-level it has spectacular views over east-central Scotland. Beecraigs Country Park is nestled high in the Bathgate Hills and the annual Highland Games are held in Meadow Park each May.
