Gorebridge is a village in Midlothian in Scotland north of the Moorfoot Hills 12 miles south-east of Edinburgh. The village was planned and laid out in 1799 on land which was originally the Estate of Stobs, one of the 12 local estates gifted by King David I to the Knights Templar. During the17th and 18th centuries Gorebridge was a thriving mining settlement for coal-mining and its lime-works. Stobs Mill was the first gunpowder mill in Scotland which opened in 1793; the gunpowder made here was used in the Napoleonic War. Surrounded by beautiful countryside, rolling hills, the panoramic Arniston Glen and historic Gore Glen, Gorebridge has been a popular tourist resort since the 19th century, with guest-houses, B&B’s, holiday accommodation, shops and places to eat out. Historical attractions include Arniston House built in 1750, the medieval Borthwick Castle, the remains of Newbyres Castle and an ancient Hillfort on Camp Wood Hill. There is a network of walks, paths and dedicated routes for walkers and cyclists through the hills and glens and The Edinburgh International Climbing Arena is located at nearby Ratho, in a disused rock-walled Quarry 100ft deep attractions include; The Sky Ride- an aerial assault course suspended 25m over the floor of the arena, a climbing shop and a health and fitness club.
