Humbie is a rural hamlet in East Lothian in Scotland situated beneath the Lammermuir Hills on the west bank of the Humbie Water, 4 miles east of Pathhead and 15 miles south-east of Edinburgh. The scattered settlement was formed in 1618 with the union between Keith Marischal and Keith Hundeby. Historically interesting features include the 18th century Humbie House, Humbie Mill lying on the Humbie water and Humbie Kirk, a T-plan Gothic Parish Church built c1800 with the chancel added in 1932 and in the kirk-yard lies the heraldic tablet of the Borthwicks of Whitburgh of the early 1600’s, opposite stands the 18th century lectern-style Humbie Doocot, now a residence. Surrounded by countryside and picturesque scenery Humbie is a popular tourist destination and an ideal base to explore Edinburgh and the Lothians, attracting golfers, cyclists, nature watchers and hill walkers en-route to the Lammermuir Hills and the Southern Upland Way. The hamlet has several large houses in the area including Johnstounburn House a 19th century tower house, currently an elegant hotel complete with the original two-chambered doocot in the grounds and in nearby parkland stands the impressive Keith Marischal House built in 1598 by the Keith’s which has been converted into holiday accommodation.
