Uphall is an ancient village in West Lothian in Scotland situated on the Brox Burn, to the west of the town Broxburn, 13 miles west of Edinburgh. Formerly known as ‘Strathbrock’ meaning ‘valley of badgers,’ Uphall developed during the 19th century with its shale-mining and paraffin industries. Historically interesting features include Middleton Hall built c1700 and the Strathbrock St Nicholas Church with ancient tower and nave and attractive Romanesque doorway dating back to 1187, the church also houses one of the oldest bells in West Lothian dating back to c1500, The Houston House Hotel has crow-stepped gables and was built in 1601 originally as a tower house for Sir Thomas Shairp, the hotel currently has a leisure club and its own golf course and the Oatridge Hotel built c1800 also has impressive architectural features. Uphall is a popular tourist destination and with excellent transport links it is an ideal base to explore Edinburgh, the Lothians and the Falkirk area. The village has holiday accommodations, shops and amenities, pubs, cafes and various places to eat out. There are two golf courses, the 18-hole Uphall course dating back to 1895 and the 9-hole Oatridge course. Nearby attractions include canal-boat tours on the Union Canal which runs from Edinburgh to Falkirk
