Horsley is in fact divided into two villages, West Horsley and East Horsley. The villages are about one mile apart and situated close to the A246 trunk road from Guildford to Leatherhead. West Horsley lies along the road whilst East Horsley is just a little to the north of it. West Horsley was mentioned as far back as the Domesday Book in 1086 and has a church which dates back to the 11th century. The village also boasts West Horsley Place, a medieval house that was developed substantially between the 16th and 18th centuries. The house was once occupied by Carew Raleigh, son of Sir Walter Raleigh. East Horsley is served by Horsley Railway station, on the line between Guildford and London Waterloo. There is a large Gothic mansion at East Horsley, which was designed by Sir Charles Barry, who also designed the Houses of Parliament. It was once the home of Ada Lovelace, who worked with Charles Babbage on his Analytic Engine, effectively the world's first computer. She wrote programs for this engine (making her perhaps the first computer programmer in the world) and saw its application going far beyond the calculating machine that Charles himself saw it as. The village pub is the King William IV which serves food and has outside seating. Horsley Towers provides a fantastic venue for corporate functions or just a relaxing break.
