Dufftown is a village in the Moray district in Scotland situated 17 miles south of Elgin lying on the River Fiddich. Dufftown is known as ‘The Malt Whiskey Capital’ with seven distilleries erected between 1823 and 1898, it produces more malt whiskey than any other town in Scotland. The settlement was originally known as Mortlach from the Middle Ages. Dufftown was founded in 1817 by James Duff the 4th Earl of Fife and was a planned village set in an area of great historical interest popular with tourists. Morlach Kirk dates back to the 13th century, with a number of carved stones in the vestibule and a carved elephant-stone and a battle-stone in the Kirk-yard. On the north side of town stands the medieval Balvenie Castle, built with some of the ruins of the 15th century Achindoun Castle. In the centre of town there are the 19th century clock tower, now the tourist information centre, a museum, and various shops including a kilt-maker, a hotel and a restaurant. The Glenfiddich Distillery has a Visitor Centre with guided tours and is a major attraction on the Speyside ‘Whiskey Trail’. Dufftown lies at the end of the ‘Speyside Way’ popular with walkers and hosts Highland Games each July.
