Innerleithen is a town in the Borders region of Scotland situated between Peebles and Galashiels on the north bank of the River Tweed. The town was well-known as a thriving tweed-milling community from the 1700. During the 19th century the Victorians regarded Innerleithen as a spa town with the sulphurous springs of St Ronan’s well reputed to have healing powers. Famous visitors to the town include Robert Burns in 1787 and Sir Walter Scott who wrote the novel St. Ronan’s Well in 1823. The Well is still a visitor attraction it has a sampling pavilion and local history museum. Innerleithen is surrounded by the scenic Moorfoot hills and forests of the Tweed Valley; it is a popular tourist destination and an excellent centre for mountain-biking, hill-walking, golf, fishing, heritage and nature-watching. The town has shops, hotels, holiday accommodation and plenty places to eat. Attractions include Robert Smails Printing Works in the High Street founded in 1837. Two miles south stands Traquair House dating back to 1107 and is the oldest inhabited house in Scotland which offers guided tours. Craik Forest and Thornlee Forest are Forestry Commission Woodland with a variety of mixed conifers and way-marked routes and the Grey Mare Tail Nature Reserve is a conservation area with visitor centre. Innerleithen hosts the annual Border Games.
